When you try to upgrade the NIC driver on HP ProLiant server, specifically for “HP NC-Series Broadcom 1GbE Multifunction Adapter”, either directly on the server or through the VCAgent, you could see this kind of error message:

HP Virtual Bus Device installation requires a newer version. Version 4.6.16.0 is required.

HP knows this is a problem since SmartStart version 8.20.  An advisory has been posted.  Basically you have to upgrade to version 4.6.16.0, then continue the rest to the most recent version.

Here is the main link:

Another support document:

I haven’t try the steps in the HP docs yet, will confirm later.

Update: This has been confirmed.  I have successfully upgraded NIC drivers for more than 20 servers using the procedure in the HP document.
